I'd be surprised if Jay averages more than 3,000 to 3,500 per game.  According to UIL rules, if a chapter works a school's scrimmage and is paid for it, they are obligated to cover all of their varsity and maybe even sub varsity contests.   We cannot tell a school we refuse to cover their games if we worked their scrimmages.  Things work here in Texas a lot differently than other states.

Of course all the members of the chapter can scratch the school and then they would not be able to assign anyone.

I hadn't heard that.

Per UIL

Chapters that agree to provide officials and charge for scrimmages are under obligation to provide officials for the school for the entire season, grades 7-12.

Easy solution.  Give them their $100 bucks for the scrimmage back, and remove the obligation.
Coach: "I've been doing this 30 years!  I know the rules!"
Ref: "Are you married coach?"
Coach (suddenly offguard): "umm...yeah, why?"
Ref: "I've been married 30 years and my wife says there is still room for improvement"
Coach: "<silence>"

Easy to overcome when the school fails to satisfactorily provide for the safety of the officials by not addressing the issue at hand.  Until John Jay permanently removes these two from all UIL competition FOREVER, then I wouldn't do any of their games.

They have both been removed from the school.  Handles it while the investigation and final decisions are made.  I agree that the Sophmore should not be allowed to play any HS sport again -- but I would not boycott their games if he is allowed to play again next year.  But that is just me.

Yeah, let's reward them with more publicity.  Just what we needed and still no answers.

What is gonna come from this?  The pore mistreated urchins gonna tell how they were soooo mistreated, their self esteem just absolutely crushed, they were misunderstood,  their actions completely justified,  and that mean ole SON OF A GUN in the striped shirt deserved it,  the coach said so.
Somebody is thinking this is gonna help,  I don't much think so

Baffling but mitigation can be the only answer.

Just saw the interview.  Interesting that they seemed to blame the coach for putting the hit on the official.

Of course they said they heard 2 racial comments (one on what language the players should be speaking since they are in America and the other using the n word).

I understand staying silent from the official's side and all the groups that are with the official...but unfortunately, in this day and age...if you don't jump out and get ahead of something and get your story out there first from your own mouth...you very well may end up on the crap end of the stick.

Just what did they mean to do?  Give me a break!

The coach told me to do it. Garbage is the nicest word I can use. They should have thought about that before acting like idiots. If they are the great kids they think they are, at a minimum they could have told the coach "No, that's not right and we're not going to do it."

Reading the Replies in the article... It looks like 98% of them think the kids are thugs and should be kicked off of the team.  There were 1400+ comments so it is good to see it is not a slanted point of view of just us old refs.

I assume the complaint that the school district is filing is a CYA move in case Mr. Watts sues?

The kids apologized, they're sorry. they didn't mean to do it"

Well, since they apologized, then that's enough. Except they didn't. They said they'd "like to apologize", it may be a sematic difference, but there is a difference. I'd like to win the lottery, but it doesn't mean I did.

But even if they did apologize, so what?

They didn't mean to do it? What, exactly DID they mean to do?
