Pass interference Tennessee vs oklahoma

There was a pi call late in the game Tennessee vs Oklahoma. The ball appeared on TV to be uncatchable. The defender never turned his head to find the ball and ended up just shoving the guy out the back of the end zone. My question is does it matter if the ball was catchable or not?  If dude commits the foul not knowing where the ball is its still a foul right?  I dunno!?!?!

Yes it matters. But when in question, the pass is catchable. If it's not catchable you could also have a personal foul under 9-1-12.

Speaking only from my association (and I do high school not college, so take that as it may), if he doesn't turn around and there's any question as to catchability (is that even a word?) flag it. The fans might not like that, but that's the rule.

I was doing the rules analyst for ESPN last night and when I first saw the contact, I thought uncatchable.  Then when I watched it again, the contact was so early that it prevented the receiver from making a move toward the ball.  Some thought it was too high to catch but one angle it appeared if the receiver wasn't interfered with that he "may" have been able to get to the ball.  I ended up liking the call... benefit of the doubt goes to the receiver.  Also, BJ/SJ got together and talked so I'm confident this was discussed.
