Coach: "I've been doing this 30 years!  I know the rules!"
Ref: "Are you married coach?"
Coach (suddenly offguard): "umm...yeah, why?"
Ref: "I've been married 30 years and my wife says there is still room for improvement"
Coach: "<silence>"

I'm really not sure what to think on this one, because when he gets up after being checked from behind, (Yes, checked from behind, the correct call would have been given five and game like they hand out to so many players in the NCAA) he looks like he doesn't know where he is. I'd like to think the linesman skated backward into him and that he was concussed as he was headed off the ice, but it's up to the NHL to figure it out.

Looks to me like he followed through on the check with his arms.  Going to be interesting to see how the NHL comes down on this one...

Looks like a legal check to me.  Looks Shoulder to Shoulder

I wondered why the NHL hardly gives out CFB's like the NCAA does. In college, anything from behind (player was in passing posture) that involves a head going into the boards is five and game. It's hockey's equivalent to targeting in football.

He was suspended indefinitely pending a hearing. I guess you've got to interview everybody before you can figure out what to do about it. I'd really like to believe that story, that he didn't intend to blast the official, but we'll find out soon enough.

It is the equivalent to the NFL not ejecting players for targeting.  There's a known, and accepted, higher level of risk playing at the next level.  That's my theory at least.

There was a time, not all that long ago, when decisions about whether a foul was deliberate, excessive or in any other way EARNED disqualification, and were made EXCLUSIVELY by the game officials (for whatever game being played), and the games generally progressed from that point, successfully.

Technology has brought us to the point where EVERYONE now believes they should have a say in these decisions, and strangely enough all the replays, slow motion, multiple camera angles and never ending discussions and opinion sharing, doesn't seem to accomplish much of anything to ACTUALLY improve the games being played.

Makes you wonder if where we're heading will be to settle these matters by a show of hands vote.

Interesting, considering how much the NHL hates Torres, who sat 41 games for a rather minor hit.

Raffi also had a long history of... questionable... acts, though. As a Hawks fan, I clearly remember the shot he took on Hossa a few years back, and that wasn't his first (or second, or third..) one.

IMHO.....

If on an opponent : cross check - 2 minute minor

If on an official : cross (out any) check (you planed on getting for the next 20 games) - plus (hopefully) a huge fine.

Hockey is a rough sport...sometimes even rougher for the official.
Who remembers when Maurice "the Rocket" Richard decked a lineman when playing for Lord Stanley's Cup= ejected for that game & next = next game at Montreal Forum = fans threw lightbulbs on ice = Habs forfeit = fans (& OTHERS) riot in the streets of Montreal = calvery (RCMP) arrive = 300+ arrested = 80% didn't know what the riot was about, but it looked like fun......

HOCKEY IS A ROUGH SPORT....
