This is a disturbing trend in human evolution.  Why when how did we get to the place that people feel it is okay to enter the locker room uninvited - much less attack anyone???

So what can be done from the referees to de-escalate these "events"?
When calling fouls or ejections - take the emotions out of the call.  This is tough because everyone gets wrapped up in the flow of the game.  Often these events take place because both sides are emotionally charged.  If one is non-emotional, it usually leaves the other side an avenue for release.  The only exception is for the plate umpire in baseball - normally people enjoy seeing the animated calls.

I also feel that the allowance of letting people fudge on the rules has contributed to these events because no two corner-cutting are the same.  For instance, look at dribbling in basketball; we have allowed the underhand carry so much that I know longer know when it is a carry or dribble.  Same with traveling.  Last night I watched Duke win on the last shot after the player took 4 steps - jeez Maloney.  We will allow four steps but god forbid a player lets his sneaker squeak 1 inch and that is traveling.

How about football with all the talk of concussions these days?  We allow spearing and practically NEVER call it.  In fact, players are taught to put there head on the ball to dislodge it - but we NEVER call it.  How about the practice of slapping at the ball to knock it loose?  That has turned into punching and if you don't hit the ball, be sure to hit something (i.e. Ribs, kidneys, gut) - but it is never called!  We have allowed aggression to be allowed into these games - and that aggression flows into the stands.

As far as hockey goes, I went to one game many years ago - all it was was a brawl on ice.  I have never watched again.  People go to watch the fights, not the game.  Just like Nascar, people go to watch the wrecks, not the race.

Most of this can be attributed to the declining respect for authority and our fellow (wo)man.

The school Administrators should be held accountable for this situation. How did two parents gain access to the Official's Locker Room after a game? Florida requires an Officer to be present for all home games in High School. In most cases, those officers accompany the Officials to and from the locker room. The state has initiated a felony charge in cases where Officials are attacked. These parents should be charged and forbidden from participating in any school sport for life.

We had one situation on a blocked try for point after a TD. The player that blocked the kick was not the player that hit the kicker and holder. We flagged it correctly and handled the new try for point. After the game the Head Coach came into our locker room and threw a fit for about ten minutes. We filed our report, he got fined and we were then assigned another home game at his facility. His threat of our being black listed carried no weight. He was informed that he had no state supported authority to black list any crew and that our crew would work another game at his school in the future. In actuality he had two of the best officiated games of the season and admitted as such. Following the second game he asked if he could come into the locker room to apologize. He took several minutes, explained that he was absolutely wrong in his actions and guaranteed he would never walk into another officials locker room again.

I couldn't resist the opportunity the following year. We were delayed for about 15 minutes getting into the locker room. I walked over and shook the coach's hand before the game and laughed "Remember us from last year." "Why yes I do" "I know you promised to stay out of the locker room, but did you have to leave the ten foot alligator in front of the door?" "You guys got to meet Charlie?" "The host coaxed him away from the door after about fifteen minutes."

This is really off subject, but crown of the helmet is step one of the targeting flow chart.
