CIVILITY...in sports...in politics...in life....
« on: December 05, 2018, 08:16:46 AM »
The National Hockey League was founded in 1917 with but six teams. They would play each other about a dozen times each. The brutality of the sport lead to the opponents to be treated as the enemy, with the interest being as much to injure him than scoring a goal. Then in the 1930's a tradition started of a handshake line between the winners and losers at the conclusion of a Stanley Cup series. This caused the evolution of opponents seeing each other as just that, to be respected, and to be played hard BUT fair against. Today that tradition has moved to every level of every sport in our country.

The Passing of President George H.W. Bush appears to have rekindled some civility between the two parties. The Democrats and Republicans are opponents - sharing opposing views - not enemies -trying to do harm to each other. We can only hope that it lasts.

Our avocation of officiating is similar, the coaches/fans/players/whoever are not our enemy , they have an opposing view of a call/non-call we just made. We are like a judge in a courtroom, his verdict will probably not be welcomed by both parties. A veteran coach once told me : "For every mistake you make, we make ten. The difference is we 'remind' you of yours!" Our thick skin helps us prevail. Charles O. Finley ,former owner of Oakland A's, had a great slogan hanging above his desk....

   "IF TWO MEN AGREE ON EVERYTHING, ONLY ONE WOULD BE NEEDED"

ACCEPTING, BUT NOT AGREEING WITH EACH OTHER'S OPINION, IS A VITAL COMPONENT OF MAKING OUR COUNTRY GREAT...IN EVERY WALK OF LIFE...

ALAS, it seems like Mr. Finley's observation (warning) is rapidly evolving into, "Life would be so much better, if only that "other fool" would get his/her head out of his/her butt", by every side of every discussion.

And this coming weekend we have perhaps the greatest example of an opponent being someone you play hard against but still respect -- that being the Army - Navy game.

As today happens to be the Independence Day here in Finland and we had a bloody civil war 100 years ago, let me share a thought:

The civil war was fought on the lines of "the right" and "the left" (the left started out controlling most of the Southern Finland and the right controlled northen parts), with the right winning with the help of Germany (the left was hoping for help from Russia, but due to the situation there, no help came). So far nothing unusual, and in retrospect the result was "the right one" (victory by the left might have resulted in Finland being taken over by the Soviet Union). What wasn't usual was that about 80,000 people from "the left" side were put into concentration camps, and at least 12,000 of those dying in the camps. These numbers were about 2.5% of the total population in the camps and 0.3% dying in the camps (if this would happen in modern day US, the numbers would be eight million and one million).

The interesting thing is that there was a nationwide municipal election in November. Both sides participated, there was no violence and no election fraud by either side, and the left managed to get a nationwide share of 36%, meaning that as most of the important decisions needed a 2/3 majority, the right had to negotiate with the left (and vice versa in some cities where the left managed to get the majority).

We nowadays often say that the Winter War in the beginning of the WWII was what brought the nation back together, but I think it really was the effort of the many municipal "politicians" from both sides putting aside their differences and working together in 1919 and onwards (there were lots of important political decisions made between 1919 and 1921, both on the national and the municipal level). The Winter War miracle against the Soviet Union was more of a result of that work, all Finns working towards a common cause to keep Finland free.

We may disagree (sometimes vehemently) on issues, but let's respect the fact that quite often people do have informed opinions even if we think those opinions are wrong, and we are all the same people.

It has been brought to my attention that my statement in the OP is not totally correct. I stated : "The handshake line...has moved to EVERY level of every sport in the country."

I now acknowledge that is not totally correct in MLB. While there is a handshake line, players are only shaking hands with their teammates while the defeated foes merely peer on glumly from their dugout :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(.

I should have realized this ,as a member of Red Sox Nation, and saw it often. If a divisional/ league / world championship is involved, they then all gather in a circle and dance ??? ::).

In defense of MLB's handshake line, I can but say :
 (1) the foul line is in FAIR territory;
 (2) the foul pole is also in FAIR territory;
 (3) only the DEFENSE can have possession of the ball.

Coming from a sport with these oddities , maybe I can understand why their handshake line only involves teammates  :o, BUT in their handshake line you never get a chance to shake hands with those in your line  hEaDbAnG hEaDbAnG.

I'll stop pondering this tomorrow as the proposed NFHS rule changes are scheduled to arrive yEs: :sTiR: !!

Perhaps I've missed it while heading to the toilet or kitchen, but I don't recall ever having seen a handshake line following ANY NFL game, including the SB.  Have I missed something?
Most of the time I just see donning of adjustable hats, sideways, with manufacturer's tags dangling, like that is some sort of "major award," as Mr. Parker claimed in "A Christmas Story."  And claims of, "I'm going to Disney World," which they are paid to say, and I doubt they ever go.

Sorry to be,
Mr. Pessimist

While not quite as formal as the NHL - or high school for that matter - NFL coverage usually focuses on Tom B. & Coach B. shaking hands with the vanquished foes ;).  More and more, they're the vanquished foes  :'( . I guess that comes with old age  :'( :'(.

I do love the NHL, and that's one reason why.  Great game between Pens and Caps last night.
