2 minute rest period after 2nd and 4th extra periods
« on: July 19, 2019, 06:31:12 AM »
I hope nobody gets to this point in a game, but the new rule requiring a 2-minute "break period" after the 2nd and 4th extra periods is a bit incomplete.  Is that a total (maximum) game interruption of 2 minutes, i.e., 90 second time out, 5 second notification, then 25 second play clock?  Or, is that a 120 second time out, 5 second notification, then 25 second play clock for a total (maximum) game interruption of 2:30?

The first one to get an audience with Shaw and/or Redding, please inquire (and report back).  The one crew in the entire US that will have this happen this season will need to know.   :)

I'd guess 2 minutes of rest means 2 minutes before bringing teams back in the field in non-tv games.

Well, we’d be getting teams back on the field at about 1:40, then declare the ball ready at 2:05.

But, I have no positive knowledge of that.  Waiting to hear from someone that does.  Bueller?  Bueller?

  • Without officials... it is only recess.

In the grand scheme of things does it really matter?  We are talking about 30 seconds.  I would guess on games with media (TV or Radio) that time out would be set to give the appropriate time and dictate when the next play starts.

Agreed. They probably intentionally left it a bit vague and just picked a good round number. At 1:50, start blowing the whistle and getting them lined up. When everyone is there, blow RFP. We're not launching rockets or anything on this.

TV/Radio is precisely why this needs to be specified.  TV/Radio will need to know if they have 90 seconds to be back from break, or a full 120.  (Although, by this point in a game, the producer will be wanting this game to get over, so they can send the audience to another game, and he can go home.). But, just like a team T/O or a media T/O, this T/O needs the same structure, so TV/Radio will know when to be back.
