Keep the brain cells going
« on: August 26, 2020, 10:35:16 AM »
A1/10@A-25. A1 scrambles but is hit as he throws at the A-19 and the ball bounces out of his hand awkwardly. The LJ sees B84 recover the apparent loose ball at the A-21 but is quickly lost in the pile. The R rules that the A1s hand was moving forward and therefore it is an INC pass. Replay shows that the A1s hand was not moving forward. Ruling after replay?

A1/10@B-35 QB A1 drops back to pass and throws a quick bullet pass to the TE over the middle but the pass first bounces off guard A55s helmet and is intercepted by B88 at the B-27. B88 returns the ball to the 50 where he is pushed OB. During the return B12 is called for an illegal blindside block. After the play B88 is called for taunting. Ruling, Clock?

The statement indicates that the L positively saw a recovery of the ball by B84. Assuming B84 is "down" when this happens, end of story, even if B84 and the ball subsequently disappear into a pile. The RO will have to award possession of the ball to Team B. Due to the award of a first down to Team B, the play clock is set to 25 seconds, and will start on the Referee's signal. The game clock will start on the snap. B, 1/10, A-21, snap (25).

Nothing that happens before the interception is of consequence. (The ball bouncing off A55's helmet is ignored, with respect to rules.)  The down ends when ball carrier B88 goes OB at the 50. B12's live-ball BSB penalty is then completed, with the 15-yard penalty being enforced according to the 3 & 1 principal at the Basic Spot. Unfortunately, we don't know the spot of the foul, so we can't be sure if the penalty should be enforced from the Basic Spot, or from the spot of the foul. If the spot of the foul was beyond the Basic Spot, then the penalty, from the Basic Spot, takes the ball to the B-35. If the spot of the foul was behind the Basic Spot, then the penalty would be enforced from the spot of the foul (might be a full 15 yards; might be 1/2 the distance). The penalty for B88's dead-ball UNS for taunting is then completed, with the 15-yard penalty taking the ball either to the B-20, or deeper into B territory (depending on the spot where the BSB penalty left the ball). Due to the completion of the penalties, the play clock is set to 25 seconds, and will start on the Referee's signal. Due to the award of a first down to Team B, the game clock will start on the snap. B, 1/10, B-20 (?), snap (25). B88 has one UNS on his UNS counter. (If that was B88's second UNS of the game, he is ejected.)
