S-B Quiz 2022-01
« on: September 07, 2022, 12:00:56 PM »
I know the answers are already out there, but I haven't looked at them yet. So, let's see how I did.

1.   3/10 @ A-40. QB A12 takes the snap, rolls right and is looking for a receiver downfield. RG A66 fires out and blocks blitzer B49 below the waist at the A-43. The block is directed from the front. A12 keeps the ball, turns upfield and runs for a 15-yard gain.
RULING:
A, 3/22, A-28, ready (25).
Illegal Block Below the Waist by A66 (initiated more than one yard beyond the neutral zone). The 15-yard penalty is enforced per 3 & 1 from the Basic Spot (which is the end of A12’s run). The spot of the foul is behind the Basic Spot, so the penalty is enforced from the spot of the foul (A-43), taking the ball to the B-28, and the down is repeated.

2.   4/10 @ B-45. A89 punts and during the kick, receiver B44 signals for a fair catch at the B-10. The ball lands at the B-5, bounces high into the air and as A88 is running to down the ball, B44 blocks A88 at the B-6. The untouched kick rolls into the end zone and is declared dead there.
RULING:
B, 1/10, B-3, snap (25).
Illegal block after a fair catch signal. The 10-yard penalty (new for 2022) is enforced from the spot of the foul (B-6, which, in this case, will actually be ½ the distance to the goal), taking the ball to the B-3, with Team B awarded a series at that spot.

3.   4 /10 @ B-45. A89 punts and during the kick, receiver B44 signals for a fair catch at the B-10. The ball lands at the B-5, bounces high into the air and as A88 is running to down the ball, B44 blocks A88 at the B-6. The untouched kick rolls out of bounds at the B-2.
RULING:
B, 1/10, B-2, snap (25).
Illegal block after a fair catch signal. Since the penalty would leave the ball at the B-3, and the natural result of the down would leave the ball at the B-2, Team A will obviously decline the penalty.

4.   3/10 @ B-30. Late in the second period, ball carrier A44 runs around left end and is hit by defender B54 short of the line to gain. At the B-23, A44 throws a backward pass that crosses out of bounds at the B-25 just before A44 is down inbounds. The clock is stopped with 0:12 remaining. Neither team has a time out remaining.
RULING:
A, 4/8, B-28, 0:02 (2), ready (no play clock).
Illegal pass thrown out of bounds to conserve time. The penalty is five yards from the spot of the pass, plus loss of down. Additionally, since the foul occurred during the last minute of the second period, Team B may (and most likely would) elect a 10-second subtraction from the game clock, which will take the clock to 2 seconds remaining in the half. By rule, the game clock will start on the referee’s signal. (Team A would probably have time to establish a field goal kicking formation before the ball is ready for play, and could snap the ball immediately after the ball is declared ready, and, make a field goal attempt.)

5.   4/Goal @ B-2. QB A12 is under center and takes the snap, pivots and from the B-3 pitches the ball back to A44 who muffs the ball at the B-6. The ball is subsequently recovered by A88 in Team B’s end zone where he is down.
RULING:
A, Try, B-3, no clock (40 and running).
This is a ball loose from a backward pass, and may be recovered (and advanced) by any player of either team. Since A88’s recovery is in Team B’s end zone, Team A has scored a touchdown.

6.   2/10 @ B-25. Late in the second quarter with the score tied, the game clock reads 0:45 at the snap and both teams are out of timeouts. During the play, A55 loses his helmet and RT A77 is flagged for holding at the B-23. Ball carrier A44 is tackled inbounds at the B-19 with 0:38 remaining on the clock.
RULING:
A, 2/18, B-33, 0:38 (2), ready (25). A55 may not participate in the next down.
The game clock was stopped to complete a penalty; thus, there is no opportunity for a 10-second subtraction due to the helmet coming off of A55. The 10-yard penalty for the holding foul by A77 is penalized from the spot of the foul (B-23, per 3 & 1, with the Basic Spot at the B-19), taking the ball to the B-23, and second down is repeated. There is no adjustment to the game clock. The play clock is set to 25-seconds, and both clocks will start on the referee’s signal. Due to his helmet coming off, A55 may not participate in the next down.

7.   Free Kick @ A-35. A21 is offside and the kickoff goes out of bounds at the B-20 after it has been touched by B80 at the B-22.
RULING:
B, 1/10, B-35, snap (25), OR A, kickoff, A-30, free kick timing (25).
Due to the illegal kick out of bounds, Team B could decline the penalty for the offside foul, and accept the ball 30 yards from the previous spot (B-35), OR team B could accept the 5-yard penalty for the offside foul at the previous spot and have the kickoff repeated. Team B would obviously NOT have the 5-yard penalty for the offside foul enforced at the dead-ball spot (B-20, taking the ball to the B-25).

8.   4/12 @ A-35. Team A is in scrimmage kick formation and A90 punts the ball. Gunner A88 is flanked out to the right side of the formation and after the snap B21 jams A88. B21 holds A88 as A88 tries to work free down the field during the kick. A88 finally breaks free at the B-45. B44 catches the punt at the B-25 and returns to the B-30.
RULING:
B, 1/10, B-15, snap (25).
The holding foul by B21 qualifies for PSK enforcement with the end of the kick (B-25) being the Basic Spot. Thus, the penalty is enforced 10 yards from the end of the kick, and Team B is awarded a series at that spot.

Gee frickin' whiz. I gotta slow down or somethin'.
Got 2 AND 3 wrong, because I was thinking of free kicks, for which an illegal block after a fair catch signal is a SPOT FOUL. No, idiot. It clearly says "4/10, B-45" in both cases, which means it was a scrimmage kick. So, PSK applies. My #2 result was actually correct, but, for the wrong reason. Wake up.

Got 6 wrong because I didn't notice that the score was tied. I was thinking they hadn't given us score information. But they had. Pay attention.

And, perhaps worst of all, I got 7 wrong because I apparently ignored the fact that the ball had been touched by B before going OB. It is right there. In plain English. So, no illegal kick OB penalty. Only OFK at the previous spot, or OFK enforced where the dead-ball belongs to B (B-20).

Slow down. Get all the info from your crew before declaring any penalty.

Maybe next time.
