Punt touched players towel

Navy/SMU game.  Punt hits no part of the recieving team player's body, but does touch the towel attached to him.  The ball is recovered in the EZ by kicking team for a TD.  Is this touching of the towel considered to have touched the player?

Without peeking at a rulebook I would say yes - it's technically part of his uniform/equipment, I would think. But, I would have to be very, very sure that it actually touched the towel to rule that.
