Block below waist - defensive ends
« on: October 12, 2024, 03:17:17 PM »
Can Team B defensive ends BBW initial charge as long as they are completely inside tackle box or just have to have a foot inside tackle box? Or neither?

“(UIL NOTE: For a lineman’s initial position to be considered “completely inside the tackle box”, he must be positioned within five yards of the snapper, and be no more than the second lineman from the snapper).”

My understanding is that there is no requirement to be 'completely' inside the tackle box: I know for sure that for Team A, they must only be 'catching a piece' of the tackle to be considered inside the tackle box, so I'd assume the same is true for B.... I know what we all say about assumptions, but I've never seen/heard anything that is more restrictive for B in this regard. Relevant rule is 9-1-6-B.

That said, B must also be stationary, within one yard of the LOS, for any BBW to be legal, and the block must also be in the tackle box, so they can't dive outwards if they are on the edge.

Defensive players aligned within 1 yd of the LOS within tackle box may block below the waist on their initial line block.  All other defensive players are not allowed to block below waist except against the runner
