Speaking of ….

So, the UIL is holding playoff assignments over everybody’s heads to force them to participate in the Texas Way program. One multi-school district that I know of has already stated they would only use officials that are ‘members’ of the Texas Way. Yeah, that’s the Texas Way.

***Still don’t like being forced into something like this, but I just took the ‘course,’ and completed it. So, I am now in the Texas Way. Generally speaking, the questions can be answered by just answering in the way that is the right thing to do. Not necessarily having to spit back exact quotes or anything like that. Not a big deal. Just annoying to be forced to watch/listen to this, when it is the other side of the camera that causes the problems.

Completely agree - I fault TASO for not standing up and holding ground on this.  Every time they let officials take the blame (such as this, or the whole three strikes thing where officials can get in trouble for submissions that aren't 'justifiable') they validate the actions and abuse, ensuring it will continue on. Instead, we're treated as part of the problem, and everybody else feels we're the only problem, and thus the cycle continues...

This happens every few years, UIL attempts to take over officiating.

I just did the course as well. Takes about 45 minutes. The content is actually really good. It is helpful information in areas of life outside of officiating. I know that none of us like being forced to do things like this, but as a board member in a local chapter for multiple sports and a former TASO division board member I see the need for something like this. While I don't absolve the coaches of blame, lots of the incident reports and issues between coaches and officials could be mitigated if officials knew the rules better (coaches as well) and if officials knew how to handle their emotions and confrontations better.

I hope that officials take advantage of this training. I actually enjoyed the content. As noted above, the questions are simple and mostly common sense, as is the content. But it is my experience that lots of coaches and officials lack common sense. The reminders in this presentation, if followed, could hopefully help conflicts not escalate and when they do, be deescalated quickly.

Personally, myself and my crew got into it with a coach in a game last week. I think the coach and the crew could have handled things differently. Listening to the content of The Texas Way reminded me of that.
