Just putting this out there. I really think the penalty for OPI is way to severe. 15yds on a play that could result in either a extremely small gain vs a big gain; that also is highly visible and highly subjective, is very penial. I get it for DPI, that play could've been a big play and the way they fixed it to a spot foul under 15yds is great But 15 for OPI is still crazy, ESPECIALLY on an incomplete pass!! May be time to change that to a 10 yearder to be inline with the other severe offensive penalty of holding. Is OPI really as bad an Unsportsmanlike or Personal Foul???Just my two cents.
What I highlighted is why I think it won't change - OPI deprives the defense of an opportunity to catch the ball and regain possession. It's potentially a turnover that B was unfairly deprived of. Given that turnovers are consequential, to the game, I think having it 15 is a sufficient penalty in exchange for not giving the ball up via turnover. Lessening the penalty would almost undoubtedly result in more OPI calls are offenses would get more aggressive with it.
