S-B Quiz 5

Shaw-Blandino 2026 Quiz 5
Haven’t done this in a while. Just my answers here. Let me know if I have goofed up anything.
———————————————————————————————————————————————-

1.
Ruling:
A, kickoff, A-30, untimed down (25), OR B, 1/10, A-30, untimed down (25).
Team B may elect to enforce the 5-yard penalty for the offside foul at the previous spot and have the kickoff repeated in the extended period, OR have the penalty enforced at the spot where the dead-ball belongs to Team B at the end of the original kickoff down (A-35), taking the ball to the A-30, where Team B is (officially) awarded a scrimmage series in the extended period.
Team B will most likely have the penalty enforced at the dead-ball spot to continue play until a down free from an accepted penalty is played.

2.
Ruling:
A, 4/G, B-4, no game clock (25).
Until a legally kicked ball crosses the neutral zone, the ball remains alive and in play, and may be advanced, legally passed, or legally kicked by Team A. A23’s recovery and advance to the B-4 is legal, where Team A will put the ball in play for fourth down. Because of the legal kick down, the play clock is set to 25-seconds and starts on the referee’s signal.

3.
Ruling:
A, 1/G, B-3, no game clock (25).
After the legally kicked ball was touched by B17 beyond the neutral zone, Team B is permitted to touch the ball; thus, A75’s recovery is legal, with the ball becoming dead at the spot of recovery, where Team A will continue it’s possession series. Because of the legal kick down, the play clock is set to 25-seconds and starts on the referee’s signal.

4.
Ruling:
A, 1/G, B-3, 0:03 (4), snap (25).
Because the legally kicked ball did not cross the neutral zone, the ball may be caught/recovered by either team, and advanced, legally passed, or legally kicked. Thus, A22’s forward pass to A88, and A88’s advance beyond the line-to-gain are legal, and Team A will have a new scrimmage series at the B-3. Because of the legal kick down, the game clock was stopped when the ball became dead; the play clock is set to 25-seconds and starts on the referee’s signal; and the game clock will start on the snap.

5.
Ruling:
A, 1/10, B-34, ready (40, running).
B52 did not complete the recovery of the ball because he did not first return to the ground inbounds. When B52 returned to the ground out of bounds, this is simply a live-ball touched by a player out of bounds, which makes the ball dead out of bounds and the ball remains in Team A’s possession. The location of the ball between the goal lines when it became dead out of bounds is the progress spot (B-32), which is beyond the spot of the fumble.  So, this is a forward fumble out of bounds, and the ball is returned to the spot of the fumble (B-34). The spot of the fumble is beyond the line-to-gain, so Team A is awarded a new scrimmage series at the B-34. The game clock was stopped when the ball became dead out of bounds, and will start on the referee’s signal (except with less than 2-minutes remaining in the 2nd or 4th periods; then, snap). The play clock is set to 40-seconds and is started automatically when the ball became dead.

6.
Ruling:
A, 3/1, B-36, ready (40, running).
B52 did not complete the recovery of the ball because he did not first return to the ground inbounds. When B52 returned to the ground out of bounds, this is simply a live-ball touched by a player out of bounds, which makes the ball dead out of bounds and the ball remains in Team A’s possession. The location of the ball between the goal lines when it became dead out of bounds is the progress spot (B-36), which is behind the spot of the fumble, where Team A will next put the ball in play for third down. The game clock was stopped when the ball became dead out of bounds, and will start on the referee’s signal (except with less than 2-minutes remaining in the 2nd or 4th periods; then, snap). The play clock is set to 40-seconds and is started automatically when the ball became dead.

7.
Ruling:
A, 3/10, A-40, snap (40, running).
Legal action. While there is no direct rule that exempts a passer of intentional grounding when the passed ball is touched/batted by an opponent, AR 7-3-2-VIII specifically tells us that, under these given circumstances, the passer has complied with the spirit of the legal forward pass rules (because the ball may well have landed in an area occupied by an eligible Team A player); thus, no foul.

8.
Ruling:
A, 3/10, B-15, snap (25).
When A88 moved out of bounds voluntarily while the ball was alive, he lost his eligibility to touch a legal forward pass before being touched by Team B. When A88 returned inbounds and touched/caught the passed ball, he committed a foul for illegal touching. The penalty for this foul is loss of down at the previous spot (no additional yardage penalty). Because the game clock was stopped for the ‘apparent’ touchdown, the game clock will start on the snap. Due to the penalty completion, the play clock is set to 25-seconds, and will start on the referee’s signal.

The official answers to the S-B Quiz 5 have been issued. Thankfully, their answers follow the answers I concluded.

EXCEPT
I find it disturbing they don’t provide 100% complete answers, which would include play clock status. That can be very important, and is, sometimes, quite difficult to determine, with all of the many factors to consider that can affect the play clock. Penalty completions; 2-minute time out; helmet off; injuries; delays; clock tactics…
So many things to consider. It would be nice to get the play clock status with these rulings, so we can confirm our understanding of these issues.
