inadvertent whistle
« on: April 05, 2011, 04:53:20 PM »
This week, I have had the following action : during a passing play, the receiver make an offensive pass interference and just after catch the ball, my field fuge have maked an inadventent whistle 1 sec later.
I have had two option, replay the game because the IW occurs or replay the game with 15yards applied for the OPI and cancel the inadvertent whistle.
My question is: have I do apply the penalty if I replay the game after the IW???

Ludoline, The defensive team (Team B) has the option of having the penalty enforced. In your play that would be 15 yards from the previous spot (where the ball was snapped). If Team B does not accept the penalty then the offense (Team A) has the option of taking the result of the play at the time of the inadvertent whistle or replay the down.
In your case the defensive team would most likely have the penalty enforced. We can't enforce the penalty and apply the inadvertent whistle options at the same time.

Change the play a bit: the receiver A88 commits OPI but is unable to even touch the ball. The field judge blows his whistle just before A90 is about to make a diving catch on the untouched ball.

What next?

Oh pick me teacher pick me!!!

The ball has not contacted anything beyond the NZ
- Therefore there has been (by definition) no legal forward pass beyond the NZ
- Therefore there can be no flag for OPI
- Therefore we have IW - replay of the down and beers after the game.

Well done! Also, have fun telling the extremely irrate team B coach that he won't get the penalty yardage.

Well suppose you have a catchable pass that has been thrown forward but is not touched because of the DPI. It would be hard to explain that to anyone as to why you don't have a foul and have to wave the foul off.

So, if I understand: if an inadvertent whistle occurs during a passing or running play and foul occurs before the CSI, the team that no commit a foul as the option to take or decline the penality.
If they take the foul, the CSI point should be the basic spot for the enforcement, If they decline the penality, team in possession as the otpion to take the ball where CSI occur or replay the down and the penality's cancelled.
Exeption: the player discalified must leave the field.

Almost, but not quite. If the ball is in player possession at the time of the IW, that spot becomes both the succeeding spot and the end of the related run spot (which could then be the basic spot). If all penalties are declined, the team in possession can either replay the down or take the result of the play at that spot.

If the ball is loose after a fumble or a backward pass (or an illegal forward pass), the spot of the ball at IW is irrelevant. If all penalties are declined, the team in possession has the option of taking the ball at the spot where the possession was lost.

For legal forward passes and scrimmage kicks there is no option, the down is replayed.

This is true if there is no foul.  If there is a foul during the down then read part C.

c. If a foul or violation occurs during any of the above downs, the penalty
or violation privilege shall be administered as in any other play situation
if not in conflict with other rules (A.R. 4-1-2-I and II).
