UNS just like a PF for all purposes?
« on: June 30, 2011, 10:43:14 AM »
Been trying to figure out a way to sort out the new UNS change in my little pea brain.  How about this?

For all enforcement purposes, live ball UNS fouls by players are the same as PFs by players.

Does that work?

Z99, that would be my take as well, including the automatic first down for fouls by B.

Except for UNS after change of possession on try or in extra period....unless the PF (in comparison) is of a flagarant nature. Then, the enforcements would be the same (excluding ejection).  In these cases, the UNS is still enforced as live/ball-dead/ball?

I sure hope the interpretation is that UNS is treated like a flagrant PF (except for the ejection).  It just makes sense to make sure that this type of foul is enforced somehow, and, god forbid, make it easier for us to remember.

While I would also prefer to see it viewed as a flagrant PF for ease of remembering enforcements, I am not sure it rises to that level.  A flagrant PF REQUIRES a DQ. A single UNS COULD see a DQ but does not REQUIRE a DQ (unless it is the 2d)

I'm getting lost in OT.  Do you guys still read the rule combinations (3-1-3 and 9-2-1) to provide that in OT, a UC by Team B while in possession cancels a Team B TD, but a UC by Team A while in possession does NOT cancel a Team A TD?

If the foul is by the scoring team and it occurs while the ball is live then the score will be cancelled (provided the offending team accepts the penalty).  This is true at any point in the game since UC is now treated as any other live ball foul.

Be sure you are talking about situations in which there is a change of team possession during the down (in extra periods).  Without that, it is just penalty enforcement as usual for Team A. i.e., accepted penalties for live-ball fouls cancel a TD but the down is repeated.

But, once there has been a change of team possession, if either team fouls during the down thereafter and also scores a TD, the TD is canceled and the penalties for fouls other than Personal Fouls and Unsportsmanlike Conduct are declined by rule (i.e., the down is over). If the live-ball fouls are Personal Foul and Unsportsmanlike Conduct, the penalties are carried over to the succeeding spot.

A non-flagrant personal foul would not carry over in extra periods.  The score is cancelled but the penalty is not carried over unless it was a flagrant personal foul.

I'm having one of my many mental blocks - other than an UNS foul, what is an example of a "live ball foul treated as a dead ball foul"?
