PF signal #38

Sorry if this was already posted but I thought last year the only time we use signal #38 (personal foul) was for roughing the kicker. In the summary of penalties, this signal is listed with : tripping, facemask (I know there is no more 5 yarder) horse collar along with roughing the kicker. Any thoughts? We've been told to loose the dead ball signal for prior to the snap and after the play, takes a while to get use to so I'll be scratching my head a couple of times........... thanks.

Here is the direction we've been given:

1. Dead ball signal is not used for pre-snap fouls(see mechanics manual)
2. Dead ball signal still used for fouls after the play is over (see mechanics manual)
3. Personal foul signal is to be given for *all* personal fouls followed by the appropriate signal for a given foul (RPS, Facemask, etc). Not sure if it is in the manual, but it is what Rogers and the rest of the coordinators want and is supported in the summary of signals as you noted.

The use of S38 emphasizes to the announcers, fans, coaches and players that a Personal Foul has occurred, as opposed to another type of foul.  S38 tells the type and then another signal is given, if appropriate, to describe which Personal Foul occurred.
