HIGHLY UNLIKELY but....

What if

A1 short free kicks from the A 30. B1 muffs the recovery at the A 42, B2 bats the ball backward at the A43. B3 muffs the recovery and after a series of more butter-fingered team A and team B attempted recoveries (non of which are batted) the loose ball ends up OOB behind team A's goal line.

Safety.  2 pts for A.  It is still a kick, but the responsibility for the ball being behind B's goal line is on Team B due to the bat.

Hmmm. If it was B's end zone, yeah. But it is A's end zone. Touchback. A, 1/10, A-20.

SJ 2010, re-read. "...the loose ball ends up OOB behind team A's goal line."
The bat imparted new impetus, therefore Team B is responsible for ball OOB behind A's GL. I've got a TB.

Oops.  You are correct.   Got caught up in the bat being backward and I didn't see A's goal line.  TB is the correct answer.

Except for the bat, this actually happened in a game involving SMU. I don't recall pre- or post- death penalty, but it was a Southwest Conference game. What happened was a kickoff where the ball was line drived into an upback Team B member, then came back toward Team A's goal line. In a mad scramble for the ball, it gets moved back toward the goal line and finally goes OOB behind the goal line. Safety.

Difficult explanation to be sure.
