USC / Stanford 2 yard holding penalty?
« on: October 29, 2011, 11:08:10 PM »
In second OT, holding called by BJ. Penalty appeared to occur at the 20 yard line. Flag thrown from back on endzone an lands about the 12. Ball spotted for following down at the 22. USC head coach not happy about spot. Is that something he could have reviewed?

Not specifically allowed, but I believe in this instance this would apply:

Limitations on Reviewable Plays
ARTICLE 6. No other plays or officiating decisions are reviewable. However,
the replay official may correct egregious errors, including those involving the
game clock, whether or not a play is reviewable. This excludes fouls that are
not specifically reviewable (Reviewable fouls: Rules 12-3-2-c and d, 12-3-4-b
and 12-3-5-a).

I believe in OT, an 8 yard error in the spot of a foul would be considered egregious.

Best regards,

Brad

Looks like the hold starts at the 18.   That would have been a 28 yard toss for the B.  But he did have that wide yellow line on the field at the 15 for a reference point.   ;)    Flag landed at the 12, run ended at the 11, they went to the 22.  Ouch

Yes, it looks like he adjusted his spot - a very common occurrence. He may not have adjusted enough, though. The R can only go by the information provided ro him.

I suspect the B told the R he had a hold at the line of scrimmage and it was the R who screwed the pooch.

What's the BJ's primary keys on this play, in seven-man NCAA mechanics? Surely not a block on a behind-the-line play like this? I guess, in a roundabout way, I'm worried the R/U didn't pick this up, though U was obscured. Had one of those guys picked up the hold, it's an easy SOP 10-yard walkoff from LOS.

The 'holder' was the B's key. The R would have the tackle to the H's side. The U would have three interior linemen. All of those folks were competitively engaged, and the play flowed that way, so no keys would change. All proper and kosher.

Did the BJ call the hold on #10, or was he calling one on #85, who grabs the defender moving away from him?  If so, the BJ's flag was probably pretty close.

I agree, #10 was guilty, and that should have been the spot of the foul.  But was the flag we saw for that hold or another one?

If he was flagging the action of 85 as a hold then he has greater problems than working on his long range flag tosses

R announced the hold against #10. Could the replay official have buzzed down to have the succeeding spot adjusted?

with all due respect TMike - why would you make that kind of assumption?  it's clear the BJ adjusted his flag and it was several yards beyond the previous spot.  The R points to the flag and announces that the enforcement is from the spot of the foul.  We can debate where the foul took place but once the flag is set in this situation, it is enforced as a spot foul and correctly so on this play

Just trying to come up with SOME reason to justify the spot of the flag.  #85 was the only one I saw in the vicinity.

Before the man went in motion...B's key was actually the TE on the L's side...but once man went in motion...B properly went to #10 as key

This is a good play to learn from. It's easy to say they missed it, but what could have been done to get it right? What methods or techniques could be used to adjust the spot of the flag after it is on the ground? Could anyone else have helped the calling official?

Well, if you see the foul happen at the LOS, do make sure that your long toss ends up at the LOS after the play.

I don't know how angry the team B coach was before the next snap, but the wing official could have asked the BJ "how far from the LOS was the foul, do you remember?"
