Hope the L did not get hurt here.  He was pretty much screwed whichever way he went.  Likely would have been hit even if he had backed out straight from the GL.

Or, in other terms:
Q: What's the most important line on the field?
A: The goal line.
Q: What's the next most important line on the field?
A: The other goal line.

The line official should have moved back - which is also counter to the vector of the incoming players. Never back up in the same direction players are going: bad things happen that way.

A modest proposal: maybe guys working replay football should just bail off the goal line completely if they're not confident of having the room to get clear going straight backwards, take a best guess, and let the booth sort it out if it's wrong.  Least that way you're sure of not getting hurt.
