Good handling an inadvertent whistle
« on: January 09, 2012, 12:38:39 PM »
I was able to attend the BBVA Compass bowl Saturday. I had press credentials so I was able to stand down on the field. During one of the free kicks, Pitt pooched kicked the ball. The SMU player signaled for a fair catch. As soon as the ball touched the player a whistle sounded. The ball slid through the players hands to the turf. The crew unpiled the players and immediately went to the coaches to explain the situation and apologize. One coach was happy and the other was not so happy. It's never a fun time to have an inadvertent whistle, but it was great to see the official immediately own it and the crew take care of business. Kudos to the Big 12 crew that had this game.

This very play may be the one that causes more IW in a season than any other.  I've seen it three times at different levels this year alone.

Yes, they replayed the free kick.

Is there anyone who's worked B even semi-regularly and not done it?

Blew it on a short shanked punt to my side in a JV game many years ago.  I was so intent on giving that guy protection and that ball just slithered on down to the ground.

My crew mates said they could tell the curse words by how my head moved  :-\

Or even R.  I've certainly blown it as R (7 man crew) on a free kick.

I think I can say I have never done it - although I'm not too often in the back.
I've had IWs before, but not being too quick on a fair catch. In 100 games here in Germany I MIGHT see 2 fair catches (and then only if they have brought in an American to play for the team) - so not too many opportunities.
I manage to find them in other situations though...

We have also done it and we emphasize and discuss this situation in every pre-game.
