UNC/NC State Punt Return
« on: October 29, 2012, 08:01:10 PM »
Why was an illegal block in the back flag thrown at the 45 on that UNC punt return against NC State this past weekend?  Appears NC State 36 was going to make a play on Bernard until he was blocked from behind.

Did the crew miss this call or was there just enough side block to make it legal?

At the :15 mark and again at the :48 mark   Looks like a foul at the :15 mark but in the other view, it appears the NC State player launched himself in hopes of taking out the blocker and the ball carrier.  Looks like a good no call to me.

IMO it was a side block even without the launching.

I kept looking for something that looked like a foul. I kept looking for something that looked like a foul. I kept looking for something that looked like a foul. I kept looking for something that looked like a foul.

Finally, I looked at TxMike's post and saw that the incident in question was at the 0:15 mark of the video, so it could only be the block just in front and to the left of the BC - the one where the blockee turns his back to the blocker. Good block. No foul.

Agree. And when you have to look that hard, there probably isn't a foul. Don't go looking for trouble. There is plenty there that will easily find you.

Nothing there makes my flag hand twitchy.

i think the reason it looks worse than it is would be because the NCST player was running in the direction of the ball carrier, so his momentum carried him face-first. I agree with the others here, that's a side block and a good non-call

OK, hate to be on this block in the back thing.  What is the consensus on the block on Heath Miller on the fumble return in the Giants/Steelers game yesterday?

I vote block in the back. Defender even turned around to see if there was  a flag....he knew it was illegal.
