Late hit after fourth down

4th and 16 at midfield. Team A gains 8 yards on a running play, at which point the ball carrier goes out of bounds. He is then the victim of a late hit two yards outside the sideline. So, the question is, do we have 1st and 10 for team A at the B-27 (tacking on the PF to the end of the run) or do we have 1st and 10 for Team B at the B-27 (enforcing the penalty after the change of possession)?

I assume a similar question has been asked in the past but I can't find such a thread...can anyone post a link if this is true?

The series is over immediately the ball is dead and the line to gain is not reached; Team B's ball at their 27.  See AR 10-1-5 I.

Thanks, that's pretty clear from the approved ruling. Read something contrary recently and was a bit confused.

I had this very play during a JV game here in my rather small hometown more than a decade ago and I gave team B (visitors) the ball prior to marking off the yardage.  The coaches were fine with the explanation but the father of the kid who was hit late went crazy in the stands and then he was in my office at 9 am the next morning to tell me how stupid I was.  He didn't care to see the rulebook.  He knew I was wrong.  He still brings it up almost every time he sees me and he still knows I was wrong.

This happened in last year's Belk Bowl and the crew messed it up, giving team A the ball after the markoff.
