Oregon vs Stanford Illegal Block Below Waist
« on: November 18, 2012, 03:03:33 PM »
I sent a note to TxMike to look for the clip but at like the 5 min mark last night in the first quarter I think it was Oregon lined up in an unusual formation.

They had the center and both guards lined up normal.

Then the right tackle and right te lined up split way wide.

The left tackle and left te lined up split way wide.

They ran a quick pass to the right and I swear the right tackle blocked below the waist back towards the ball/center of the field.

THis has to be an Ill BBW if what i saw is true. Did anyone else see this play.

I know TxMike is looking so we shall wait and see

Was the right tackle more than 7 yards from the center of the formation? If so then he is restricted, if not then that would be legal.

Mechanics-wise, who's taking this?  That close to the snap, wouldn't the H still have the OT?  If so, he may have held off on a flag because he had the runner's knee down almost simultaneous with the block.

Safety foul.  Shouldn't matter

Agree - maybe he got screened out, or else the adrenaline was pumping on the knee down and he got tunnel vision.  Just saying, I can see how that would be missed based on keys.

I think the H would key the tackle on that side and the S has both the back and end.
Agree/disagree?

Not sure there is a hard and fast answer. On "normal" plays the R should make a mental note of those that are unrestricted. With this bizarre formation, alarms should go off in his head, and he should remind himslef that those guys spread way out there are restricted. Unless the QB is threatened, he could/should look to the front side of the play as soon as the pass is released to see what is happening, particularly with those wide guys wearing ineligible numbers (since they may not be accustomed to being restricted). Normally, he might be looking for a hold at the corner. In this case, if he is ostensibly looking for the hold, he will probably see the low block. If he has reminded himself belfore the snap about these wide 'restricted' players, he'll get this.

That is not to say the S/F can't get involved. They certainly can, since their key receiver isn't really being threatened at the moment the block occurs. If similar alarms went off in their heads before the snap, they can get this, too.

Why not the BJ? He's got a clear view from his position to catch that.
Keying on receiver, right in vicinity of the OL that committed the IBBW.

Team A is in a balanced formation - two eligible receivers split wide on each side.  Doesn't the B key the inside receiver on the L's side in this formation?  The pass and block were on the H's side.

All true, but as soon as the pass is thrown - well away from the L's side of the field - the B can/should move his attention to the front side of the play. Again, alarms should have gone off in his head with this bizarre formation. So, if he moves his attention to the action in front of/around the receiver after the pass is released, he may pick up this foul.

Between the R, the H, the S, and the B, this probably should get picked up.
