Can You Fix ?
« on: November 23, 2012, 08:29:43 PM »
A 1st & 10 at A-32.  They run a pass play, complete for a 12 yard gain and one of Team A linemen is flagged for a PF during the play. Penalty is accepted.  But instead of going back to the A-17, they only go to the A-22 where a play is run that gains 8 yards.  Somehow the crew then realizes they only penalized 10 yards not 15 yards on the 1st down play.  Any way to fix?

It appears their only concern was resetting of the chains. They never addressed the 10 v 15 error.

Was pretty confusing.  It looked like the penalty was "correctly" enforced as 15 yards from the flag 37-38 (the spot of the foul?), but the number given was an interior lineman #76 who was at the LOS during the play not out at the 37-38.  Then somehow the chains got moved back to the down marker as well.

The correction of the location of the line to gain was correct in any case, and if the original penalty spot was where it was enforced from (the 37 where the flag was), that would mean that the penalty was not at the LOS on #76 as the R announced?

It's easy to get the players, getting 'em to play together, that's the hard part. - Casey Stengel

That would have been the correct enforcement IF the foul happened during the running play part of the down and IF the foul was at the 37.  (Did you see a flag there or just going off the announcer claiming there was one at the 38?)  It is definitely possible #76 moved downfield and committed a foul at the 37.  The act the announcers were claiming was the flagged foul was iffy anyway. He may have done something worse further downfield.

The official stats say:

Cin 1-10 at Cin32

Kay, Brendon pass complete to THOMPKINS, K. for 5 yards to the CIN37 (BARRINGTON, Sam), PENALTY CIN personal foul (Bujnoch, Austen) 15 yards to the CIN22.

Cin 1-20  at Cin22

Kay, Brendon pass complete to Chisum, Alex for 8 yards to the CIN30 (DURDEN, Kenneth;CLIETT, Reshard).

Cin 2-12  at Cin30  2nd and 12.

So this is of no help since clearly the play gained more than 5 yards.

They had it right the first time.   First down was made at the 32.   Dead ball PF (that is how they penalized it) 1st and 10.   Then for some reason they reset the chains as if the PF was after the RFP making it 1st and 25.

Either they had it right the first time or it should have been penalized from the end of the run (or spot of the foul since I am not sure where it exactly happened) and replay 1st down.

In any case they got it wrong by moving the chains.

The PF was not after the 1st down had been made at the 32.  It was either during or after the NEXT play

I dont think the personal foul was the one shown on the replay (hands to the face).  There is no reason there would have been a flag at the 38 if that was the penalty. The referee/umpire/L/H would not have missed the spot by that much.  I think the penalty happened during the run following the catch as the lineman are pursuing the play.
