Forward progress

A34 running the ball out of the back field. Gets to the A23 and runs out of room so reverses direction. Runs back to the A21 trying to evade the rush where he is tacked, carried if the same direction he was running for a couple of steps and then downed at the A18.

Is the spot the A21 due to forward progress or A18 as he initiated the backwards movement?

If A21 ignore the next question. 

If A18, same play but he runs to the A3, tackled at A1 downed in the end zone. Do we do anything different to not give away cheap points or is it a safety?

Forward progress spot is based on the opponent's goal line not the direction that the ball carrier is heading at the time he is tackled so A21 is the FP spot.

Thanks guys.

That’s what we went with, and it was the safety play that we had in the game, but it was the fact that the ball carrier would have ended up in the endzone even if he hadn’t been tackled that made me question if you had to be going forward to get forward progress, so just wanted to confirm.
