Your Next Chance for a Prize
« on: December 18, 2012, 07:12:25 PM »
Okay fellas, first one with the right answer wins the next prize to be given out...

Team A is losing 23-20.   There are 7 seconds left in the game when A snaps from the B-40 yard line, 3d and 10.  The QB runs a keeper down the left sideline and time expires as he runs.  He crosses the goal line for the apparent score.  Before the crew can get off the field, the crowd and Team A rush the field in a wild celebration.  Meanwhile, the booth has buzzed down to advise they are reviewing.    The R throws his flag for everyone rushing the field.  After the review, the booth advises the QB actually stepped out of bounds at the B-35 and there are 2 seconds left on the clock.    Does the R assess the penalty for the folks coming on the field or wave it off and set it up so that A can attempt 1 more play from the B-35?

I believe there was a  bulletin or video play this season where RR (or perhaps a conference coordinator) advised we should not penalize in situations like this where the folks did not interfere with live ball action and may have honestly thought the game was over.  Can you point me to that ruling?

No  That is what I was thinking also but that is about when they rush the field while ball is live.  However, we do have a winner as someone off the board led me to the answer.   I should have known we would have it here on this board already.

How about this version:

Team A is losing 35-28.   Following an incomplete pass on 1st down, there are 4 seconds left in the game when A snaps from the A-48 yard line, 2nd & 10.  The QB in shotgun throws a 1-bounce backward pass to WR A-80 who has backed up some 10 yards behind the LOS and is directly in front of the B bench.  By now the game clock reads 0, and most of the Team B sideline starts streaming on to the field.  There has been no whistles and the entire crew is still officiating a live ball play.

A-80 who is still just standing there with the ball thinking that it's an incomplete forward pass has the QB screaming at him to throw the ball, and with literally dozens of B "non-players" right next to him, finally realizes that the ball is live, starts to attempt to throw the ball downfield as he is finally tackled by B-75, who is a legal player who was in the game at the snap.

There are 20+ B "players" and most of B's coaching staff and no A non-participants on the field when the whistle finally sounds.  What do we have?

That is the easy one and essentially tracks what happened in the BYU-Utah game.  15 yards to the B37 and an untimed down for A. It gets complicated when stuff happens when ball is dead

I don't get it - how is this play the same as the original play scenario you asked the question about?  The article doesn't mention a flag for fans and players rushing the field after time expired.

The concept I am investigating is acts (posible fouls) that occur when the world thinks the game is over but it turns out it is not.  That happened in both plays.

I would go with the concept of don't go looking for boogers!

If I like everyone else thinks the game is over. It is over........... I would have been in the tunnel when they buzzed for the replay.

You wanna take the easy way out?    It ain't always gonna be easy.  Sometime you might have to make a decision.

Try this one on.

Team A is losing 23-20.   There are 7 seconds left in the game when A snaps from the B-40 yard line, 3d and 10.  The QB runs a keeper down the left sideline and time expires as he runs.  He crosses the goal line for the apparent score.  As the H was running downfield, he collided with a Team B coach in the restricted area and dropped the flag. The crowd and Team A rush the field in a wild celebration just after their guy crossed the GL.  While the H is telling the R what he had, the booth buzzed down to advise they are reviewing.    The S threw his flag for everyone rushing the field when he noticed the R and H were conferring.  After the review, the booth advises the QB actually stepped out of bounds at the B-35 and there are 2 seconds left on the clock. The 15 yard penalty will move the ball to the B-20.   Does the R assess the penalty for the folks coming on the field or wave it off and set it up so that A can attempt 1 more play from the B-20?

With all that confusion, take's the flag from S, make him buy the first round at the bar for being stupid, and let common sense prevail.  ;)

I have a picture in our office of Vince Young scoring THE Touchdown.. He is at the 2 or 3 yardline going in. If you look behind him there must be 30 ppl on the field some are inside the 9's..  :sTiR:

Wave it off.
