New play

Scrimmage kick crosses the neutral zone where it is touched by an R player.  The ball rebounds behind the neutral zone where a K player possesses the ball.  He throws a forward pass which is caught by an eligible K player one yard shy of the line to gain, where he is tackled.

First down for K correct?

Yes.  Odd rule, but whoever has the ball at the end of the down gets a 1/10

It is K's ball 1/10 from the dead ball spot.  Clock on the ready as K/A is award a new series after a legal kick.

And don't forget to mark off the UNS on the R coach. There's no way that he'll believe K can kick the ball, then throw a pass, have the play end up short of the line to gain, and still get a first down. You might even have to mark off two UNS, and have the coach escorted from the sidelines.

I agree and put this in the same category as QB runs over line of scrimmage then behind the LOS and throws complete pass.  You know it is going to be 15 yards further downfield after the UNS on the coach that does not know it is a legal play.

Good point, VALJ, and that's where preventive officiating could come in. I suggest to our guys the following:

INADVERTANT WHISTLE : WH goes to coach of team in possession and explains : " Coach, we blew it. I'm going to ask your captain if he wants to take the ball where it was when the whistle blew or if he wants to repeat the down." This is relatively rare and I want the coach to understand the options so he can relay the best choice to his captain.

DISREGARD THE FLAG : "Coach, we're picking up the flag, for after confirring ,we realize -there was a receiver in the area (IG) - pass didn't cross the line (IR) -whatever"

CONFUSING PLAYS : Such as this OP, taking the time to explain something to the coach hopefully will prevent the need to flag.

IMHO, I prefer to run the game smoothly and if it takes an extra couple of minutes to do that it , it is well worth the expense. Knowledgeable coaches, such as AB, may feel it gives an advantage to coach that lacks his knowledge; but I feel it is for the betterment of the game.

PS : When a coach yells, "He was outside the tackle box...", "but the pass wasn't catchable..." and " but Bubba got back from being offside before the snap..."; I don't respond but figure the coach must think that he's coaching in the NFL...that is at least until his paycheck arrives :).

Referees, if you have a microphone, you'd better summon your inner Hochuli and explain this one to the crowd, which will be confused both if you don't and also after you do announce!  haha.

WE heard a new one from a coach at a Freshman game last week.

A scored on a 98 yard pass play to take the lead with under 2 minutes to play in 4th quarter.  On the play, B-1 was injured seriously enough to have to be attended by medical personnel.  This held up the game for about 5 minutes.  When play resumed we had the try.  As we were heading to our KO positions, Coach A asked if B was going to lose a time out because of an injury during the last two minutes of the game.  We said no (not an exact quote).

In a turn of poetic justice, B managed to score in a final drive and win the game.
