Only THE richest private school in Oregon installed play clocks recently and they ordered a controller that is the size of a tablet.
The made a special holster for it and the B wears it and runs the clocks during the game.
I believe there is some shell shock with first time B's see the size of the controller.

That is insane.

1948 : 3-6-1, "ball must be put in play 25 seconds after it is ready"

Field judge (now line judge) kept game clock , few scoreboards in town. 4 minute warning before end of each half. Ref kept play clock, some by their watch, some by counting, some by guessing.

Bake sales began to produce scoreboards, field judge was happy  , ref could now take play clock from scoreboard IF he was facing and good at math.

ReadyRef was invented.

Back Judge was born, refs often presented BJ s their ReadyRef in an off-field ceremony.

2019 : 3-6-1, added the 40 second play clock.

At the High School Level it appears the ONLY tangible, practical & cost effective benefit established by the 40/25 second play clock revision, is that Teams/Sidelines have accepted the responsibility of providing effective ball retrieval and management responsibilities, which has dramatically helped reduce wasted time, when consistently applied.

Providing the BJ/LJ (depending on crew size) the ability to visibly count down the remaining 10/5 seconds of an RFP, provides ample, and practical, assistance to the offense to avoid needless DOG.

Excessive time being spent on sidelines regarding substitutions after COP and Kicking situations is still a sideline/Coaching responsibility needing better focus and reaction by Teams. Closer, consistent monitoring and enforcement by Field Officials is far more practical correction, when necessary.

Unique, unexpected time consuming delays are still what they are and are best handled individually by Field Officials common sense.

A CONSISTENT visual & audible RFP signal to announce start of a 25 second RFP seems still the best way to insure EVERYBODY is aware of the 25 second RFP period beginning.  Stop Watches are still available to Sideline personnel, if considered necessary.

Changes for change sake, and/or to ONLY mimic the Other Levels, are STILL usually bad ideas.

I had to put my thinking cap  on for that one. Our chapter handles 19 schools, the biggest - Bangor , has a stadium with running water and the like. The remainder have what we Mainers refer to as porta-pottys...some might call'em outhouses on wheels. The booster clubs sponsor and care for them partly with selling adds that are pasted to the inner walls. Some schools have 7 or 8, a couple only have one. The lines can git long at halftime, but officials usually are granted 'waiting line immunity'. A good ice -breaker when you leave, is : "Shucks, I done dropped my  penalty flag  down the hole, who's got long arms  ? " An often heard reply is :AYUH, 'spect ya otta' leave her  ~!"

Just got to wait a few more days , Covid 22, and we will some new rules to debate.  Whoops, I forgot ..you guys use NCAA  . It is only a guess that our best stadium might compete with your worst one.

At the PuncherDome one week, we got there while they were finishing their spaghetti dinner.   We were to dress in the kitchen (Ag/maintenance building beside the field).   People were eating in the main building and we were changing while people including cheerleaders and other students were coming and going.  When they finally cleared out, in comes the visiting football team and their coaches.   We are trying to do a pre-game with them right on top of us.

But the best story I know of this field is when a fellow R on a rainy night lost his shoe in a yard line cut-out.   It was 5" - 6" below the top of the grass.  It took them 5 minutes to find his shoe.   If you couldn't guess, Mason Punchers were, are and will always be a running team.

Mason is in "West" Texas.   West, TX is in "Central" Texas.

Nobody in "West" Texas considers Mason to be in West Texas... it's only marginally further west geographically than West, Texas.  I think most people out here consider anything east of US 83 to be Central Texas.

i.e., not even in the geographic sense is it in West Texas, much less cultural.

Back to the original topic, Virginia uses Crew of 7 mechanics for the playoffs. That said, each association sets its own mechanics, but most tend to follow CCA mechanics closely, except for the part about switching sidelines at halftime. NVFOA still uses homebrew mechanics, but we've got rid of the rather absurd kickoff positioning we used to have.
