I don't live in Louisiana, but I'll bet my house that they're NOT getting $68-$74 per official for HS basketball, baseball, softball, volleyball, soccer and wrestling.

There is a comment below the article that states the following.  It was signed "coramprat."

I'm not sure where you got the figures for your article on officials pay but it is inaccurate. Depending on the level of experience, officials are paid $28-$31 for regular season freshman, JV and Varsity games; $33-$36 for Varsity Tournament games and $50-$60 for Varsity play-off games. There is an additional per diem to cover travel expenses for games outside an officials base that ranges from $12-$18.

Rick, around here we are being paid under the old 1204 schedule.  $55 for varsity, $30 for all sub-varsity and jr high.  No idea if this is a chapter by chapter thing or what.

not to go all UIL / TASO on you, but one of the UIL's stated reasons for taking over TASO was to make sure all officials got paid the same around the state, that is according to 1204.

LA - that's not very good pay.  At all.  How do you afford to buy beer after the games?

Now this is exactly what's in store for Texas basketball officials(and other sports, too) if the  tiphat: Good UIL Dr. gets to go unchecked in his desire to control all aspects of officiating in Texas!

Keep the spirit, Louisianans, and don't budge an inch! You seem to be long overdue for a much deserved game fee increase!   z^

I see now why they staged a "sit-out".  Alabama pays $40 per official (3-man) for varsity.

I read somewhere that Louisiana are 50th in the ranking of payments to officials. I guess someone has to be worst paid, but it does seem that they are paid so much worse than neighbouring states.

I will probably get crushed for this opinion, but I disagree with the walkout.

It does not sound like there was a change in the pay scale during the season, so the officials knew going into the season what they would be paid. If they were that unhappy with the pay, why start the season?

I am sure there is more to the story than is in the article, but to me this is the wrong way to handle this situation.

I am all for the officials being paid more. But they knew what the rates were at the beginning, and agreed to them (at least up to this point) what changed?

The fact that the administrators voted down a raise should have no impact at this point, because again, they knew going in what the pay was going to be, and agreed to work under those conditions.

Yes, taking the action at this point in the season does have a bigger impact than doing it in June, July, or August, but who is impacted most? Sure, the schools get hurt financially, but what about the players?

If, as is often said on this forum, it is about the kids, this action makes no sense. The kids have no responsibility in this situation, yet they are the ones being hurt the most.

Again, I fully understand the desire for higher pay. And I agree they should be paid more. I just think that they are going about it the wrong way.

Seems to me they knew there would be a meeting in the season that would get them the deserved increase.  I don't doubt they were probably even "guaranteed" it.  Then they get shut down.  Sounds like they held up their end but someone else dropped the ball. That changes things.

With the current state of affairs nationwide in terms of education funding - or lack thereof - they choose a bad time to take a stand - Louisiana is a very poor state - education cuts have been deep and wide - it's a shame the pay issue wasn't addressed a few years ago.  As it stands now - you can't make chicken salad out of chicken poop - the money ain't there.

Looks to me like a raise has been a long time coming.  That being said, I would hope that they aren't trying to remedy the inequity in pay in one whack now.  This issue should have been dealt with over time for quite a few years back.  That is pitiful for varsity level pay.  I was making $25 a game calling youth football over 15 years ago.  Two games and home by lunch.

I wouldn't have staged a walk-out, I'd have never signed on to begin with.

Can't speak for La., but in NYS where schools have been awash with money for decades, there is never any problem with finding whatever funding is necessary to satisfy the needs of educators.  When anything begins, or ends with, "It's for the children", hold onto your wallets.

That is a universal mantra all over the country and at the national level.  Whenever one side or the other wants to get something, it is always "for the kids".

it's a shame the pay issue wasn't addressed a few years ago.

It was addressed in 2007 when the last pay increase took place and the principals promised a raise of $2 (or maybe 3, I don't remember) annually through 2012.

They did not follow through on their promise.

Hogwash.

Do you see any coaches/administrators/politicians volunteering to accept a pay cut?  Raise the price of concessions by a dime & the problem takes care of itself.

No one is asking any one to take a pay cut as far as I can tell. Just to complete the season under the terms set out at the beginning. (I saw no evidence of any promise to raise the pay mid-season,only that it would be voted on).

If it's true that the raises were promised going back a couple of years, and I have no reason to doubt that they were promised, the fact remains that they were not in place at the beginning of the season and the officials chose to work under those conditions. Finish what you started or don't start it.

I support their cause in trying to get better pay, I just disagree with the methods they are using to get it.

I have read lots of stories and discussion board posts on this.  The officials "knew" before the season there would be a pay raise as the LHSAA committee working on it had agreed on it. They just needed "the formality" of an executive committee approval vote which could not come until its regularly scheduled meeting in late-Jan.  Then that committee shocked everyone by not approving it.  Sounds like the old "bait and switch" to me.   I am one of the last folks who  would ever support a "work stoppage" but sounds to me like it was needed here.  And bopttom line is that now the LHSAA principals have agreed to go back and "tweak" the pay raise proposal and get it approved and the officials have gone back to the hardwood.

I'm in this camp, too. So much for the argument that "we don't do this for the money." High school officials going on strike (let's face it... that's all you can call it) midway through the season, no matter how many promises may have been broken, is not the right means to the end.
