Funny stories
« on: September 05, 2013, 04:30:22 PM »
I have been asked to speak to a local group on officiating next week.  I would like to include some really funny stories with my presentation.  I have a few, but I would like to have a few more.  Please post any funny stories that may have happened to you as an official.

One thing to note...these guys aren't officials so some of the things that are funny to us won't necessarily be funny to them.

Thanks!

For the coin toss I use a beat up old Liberty Dollar since it's large and easier to see. At one pee wee game a 10 year old asked if he could have my coin because it was really neat looking. I explained to him that I used it for all the games I work and that I wasn't done with it. At the end of the season I was Referee for the championship game at this age group so I met this young man once again. The first thing he said was: Are you done with that coin yet?

I was working line judge in a game where the coaches were getting extremely frustrated with sloppy formations, procedural penalties, etc.  The other team ran an option play where the QB ran down the line but then pulled up and hit a wide open receiver for a long TD.  When the DB came to the sideline I overheard this discussion:

Coach:  What were you doing on that play?
DB:  They ran the option so I came up to cover the option.
Coach:  A pass is one of his options!

Same game I'm trying to help the receivers get lined up on or off the line of scrimmage.  A coach came over to me and said "you might as well give us.  We can't get him to remember his phone number so I doubt he'll ever learn how to line up."

Back when I worked wrestling.
Scenario: Johnny did not make weight, was +0.5#& his team had to forefeit the weight class.

Coach (with steam from his ears): we weighed you 30min ago and you were right on weight.  Now you're +0.5#..! ! !   What in the world did you do???
Johnny: I just had a Coke.
Coach (pulling out his hair): A COKE?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! Why did you drink something?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
Johnny: But Coach, it was a Diet Coke...

The starting QB at _______ is declared academically ineligible. Coach ______ goes to the principal and begs for another chance so the QB can play against their archrival, ________. The principal agrees if the QB can answer one question correctly he will make him eligible for the big game.
The coach rapidly gets the QB and returns to the principal’s office where the principal asks, “Tell me son, how much is  6 + 7?”
The QB thinks for a while then responds “10.”
The principal shakes his head and looks at the coach who immediately proclaims. “Give him another chance! He only missed it by one!”

Two arch rival coaches find themselves involved in an automobile accident. They each get out of their cars and approach each other. The coach from ________ says, “hey look, we are both alive and the damage to the cars is nothing compared to our health. Let’s put aside our petty rivalry for a moment and be thankful.”
The other coach from ______ says, “You’re right. I have just the right thing to toast this moment.”  He runs back to his car and reaches into the glove compartment and returns with a bottle of Jack Daniels and two plastic glasses. He fills them both with whiskey and offers one of the glasses to his long time nemesis. Coach ____ takes the glass and raises it and says “this is mighty nice of you considering I’ve kicked your butt five years in a row now.” He then chugs down the drink and notices that his rival hasn’t even sipped his drink yet and asks, “Aren’t you even going to drink yours?”
Coach ____ smiles and replies, “Oh yes I will. Right after the breathalyzer is given.”

The big animals were always bragging about their physical prowess. The little animals had had enough, so the game was on.
A football game was agreed upon as the method of combat. The big animals kicked off. The elephant tackled the lizard on his 30. On the first play, the hippo tackled the monkey before he could handoff. On the next play, the giraffe intercepted the pass and returned it for a touchdown.
This went on throughout the first half resulting in a 49-0 halftime score.
The little animals kicked off again. Again the centipede was the star, intercepting a pass and running it into the end zone for a score. This turnaround continued through the 3rd and 4th quarters and the little animals had gained a 56-49 lead, and went on to win the game.
The little animal coach turned to the centipede and said, “Hey, you had a stellar game, but where were you in the first half?”
“Coach, I was tying my shoes.”

True story:

Working a 6-man game in the Texas Panhandle years ago:

Announcer has everyone stand for the home team school song. After it is played, announcer says we will now have the school song for (visitor).

All the visitors line up along the sideline and remove their helmets. There is a very long wait....... I am standing next to the HC and I ask him what is up.  He says, " I don't know, we don't have a school song".

Can't make this stuff up!  hEaDbAnG

Comment offered to a TV reporter:  Coach of a well known College team, asked if he thought there was any hard feeling between he, and the opposing coach of their season opener, due to the fact that his team had been accused of seriously running up the score during a previous season meeting, the coach replied, "I don't think so, in fact when I saw him across the field, I held up the "Peace" sign, and he promptly signaled half of it right back."

D2 college game.
Asst coach really giving the S an earful.  For whatever reason the asst said he was in the Army & was a CPT, etc...
S spun around; looked asst from head to toe; took a step towards him and said:
I was a MGySgt in the Marine Corps; I outrank you; so dont go and try & pull rank on me.
S turned back around & went about his business.
Look on asst face was priceless.

D2 college game back when I worked on a wing.

Early afternoon kickoff in late October and the team on my sideline was getting blown out and ready to get it over. A play midway through the 3rd quarter comes to my sideline... it's close, but runner is tackled OOB and I stop the clock. D-line coach, who later became a head man and was a good friend, eases up behind me and says "Got your clubs in the car? If you can keep them inbounds on plays like that we might be able to get 9 in before dark. And I'm buying the beer."

Ah yes... those were the good old days!
