Even if you aren't an Auburn fan - say what you want about Gus - this is a pretty good read.
The Book of MalzahnThere is nothing at all artificial about any of it; he is really a first-class act. Those of us who frequent this forum (there are many) who have had the good fortune to work for him and the other high school and college coaches mentioned can relate to everything written. Lots of good memories here.
My favorite story about his attention to detail is the Shiloh semi-final playoff game at Barton one year when it rained cats and dogs for a week and the field was 2 feet deep in mud goal line to goal line. Gus brings 40 brand new footballs so his QB is assured of having a dry one to throw. I would not have believed it had I not seen it myself. Of course, Shiloh Christian was one of the few places in the world that could afford to sacrifice 40 new footballs to the elements.
Interesting, though, that two things weren't mentioned: (1) West Memphis turned him down for that first job because they were hiring for an offensive position and didn't feel he was "offense-minded" enough, and (2) he was inducted into the Arkansas High School Coaches Hall of Fame last July.
