A 1/10 @ A-20. A1 completes a legal forward pass to A2 at the 50. Passer A1 is roughed on the play. A2 then fumbles and the ball:

a) is recovered at the A-45 by A3 while his knees are on the ground

b) is recovered at the B-45 by A3 while his knees are on the ground

c) is recovered at the B-45 by A3 while his feet are touching the sideline

In each of the above, where are you tacking the 15 from?

15 yards from the end of the last run, i.e., the A-45; +15= B-40, 1st down. Tough luck, but still a good outcome.

b) is recovered at the B-45 by A3 while his knees are on the ground
15 yards from the end of the last run, i.e., the B-45; +15= B-30, 1st down.

c) is recovered at the B-45 by A3 while his feet are touching the sideline.
Forward fumble OB, bring the ball back to the 50. Penalize RPS 15 yards from the end of the last run, i.e., the 50; +15 = B-35, 1st down.

In each of the above, where are you tacking the 15 from?

Ok so the recovery of the ball by A3 while he's on the ground can be considered a "run" that ended immediately? I recall a statement in the HS casebook to that effect but could never find the correlation statement in NCAA. Was hoping an AR to that effect would be in the book somewhere instead of only using 9-1-9.

I agree in c) that it's a fumble forward oob but now let's put him back at the A-45, same situation. Is it correct to assume that because touching precedes possession that make the ball dead immediately and therefore if we can't have possession that we can't have a run, even one that ends immediately?

10-4, although the yard line he's on has no bearing on that.
